I just got my copy of VG today and it looks great! Cover looks even better than I thought it would; there's a real sheen to it. All these shots and photos in their full color, glossy glory...Holy crap. This thing is dynamite!!!

I'm so proud of this project, and I'm sure you'll all be delighted! Bill and I worked our butts off, but now that I'm holding this baby in my arms, all I can say is--boy, was it ever worth it!!!

Comments on the Vintage Games book

I must say, everyone who has seen this book has been impressed, usually saying something like "I want one!" The presentation is really so nice, and people love flipping through it and saying "Oh, I played that!!" and so on. I showed it to my friend John (Dr. Madden) here, and he was like, "What?? Where's Dino Wars for the TRS-80!" I had to laugh at that.

ha ha. Yeah, hopefully the Preface will disarm most of those why isn't game "x" in there with its sound reasoning, though I'd certainly be happy to add whatever to the online bonus images if it's warranted. No reason not to take advantage of that option.

Dino Wars (Dinowars) is pretty cool all things told as it was among the first Radio Shack Color Computer games: http://nitros9.lcurtisboyle.com/dinowars.html

Speaking of the Preface, I think it illustrates nicely why the margins in the chapters themselves are the way they are. As my wife put it, it keeps the reader from being hit with a "wall of text", which is what the non-illustrated Preface does. The readability with the main chapters is quite high because of the white space for captions.

Finally, everyone that either I or Christina has shown the book to has been blown away by how nice the thing looks. You and I were both worried about production values and certainly went out of our way to provide high quality materials to do our part. Needless to say at this point, the publisher certainly did their part!

Luckily that means you only have to purchase eight more since the publisher will be sending you one. ;-)

Only 7?

My father ordered 8. Really. Though of course all 8 are not for him...

LOL, okay, in all

LOL, okay, in all seriousness, I'd recommend at least six copies:

1. Your working copy to take notes in
2. Your collector's copy (in a safe deposit box)
3. Your bathroom copy (for reading during bathroom activities)
4. Your bedroom copy (for reading at night before going to bed)
5. Your backup copy (in case you lose the other 4)
6. Your backup backup copy (in case #5 meets the same fate; hey, if it happened 5 times it could easily happen again).
7. Damn, you got 6 copies, enough already!!!

I recommend everybody to get

I recommend everybody to get at least four copies:

1) to read and make notations in the margin - your working copy!
2) to read or display on the salon table amongst glossy magazines etc.
3) to give away as a present
4) to store in a time vault.

The cover price is $34.95,

The cover price is $34.95, which is probably what the price will jump to once it's released. If you want to purchase this book, I strongly, strongly encourage you to pre-order it. That way you'll save money. Is it really worth paying an extra $10 just to wait to hear someone else say the book is awesome? :P

I'd recommend getting two copies: one to read, the other to store somewhere as a collectible. Also, any of your friends who like games - what a great birthday or Christmas gift for someone special you know who loves games!

Mine came too!

I concur with all of Matt's statements. The book is absolutely perfect. The cover has a nice matte finish which makes it look much better than the scans indicated and the inside is all full color glossy. My only nitpick is that I would have liked the bonus chapter listing page to have italic main names like the main TOC, but I can certainly live with it and I'm sure most people won't even notice. I think purchasers will be very, very happy with the quality of the book. I know I would be if I were a purchaser. At $23.07, it's a steal!

I'll try to get a few photos up and blog about it late tonight.

Well, I've had a chance to

Well, I've had a chance to take a closer look at the book and have some really, really bad and frustrating news. These are the only advance copies--you'll have to wait a few more weeks to get your copies! LOL!!

I couldn't be more satisfied with this design. Seeing it in PDFs just doesn't do it justice. The production values on this are sky high. Indeed, the book is actually much heavier than it looks--good, solid acid-free paper. The alphabetic organization makes it easy to read the chapters in the order you want, too, though you'll still need to read it from A to Z to really get everything.
