Doug Smith's 1983 classic, Lode Runner (Broderbund; Apple II, Atari 8-bit, Commodore 64, and others), which refined play concepts from Universal's classic 1980 Space Panic arcade game platformer, was not only a great action puzzler, but was also one of the first games to allow players to create their own levels. Countless games in the series - some with radically different presentations - followed for a wide range of platforms, with new versions continuing to be released today. Pictured is 1984's Championship Lode Runner on the Apple II, which featured some of the best and most challenging user created levels in one retail package.
