Switching from Trial Version to Full Version with Free account

I had installed the 'streaming agent' which is to be used for free-trial people only. It is a smaller download and you get to play quicker - but it might be a more limited experience. As the free-trial is also working with the full-blown 3.89Gb download - which I am downloading right now - I am going to try this and see if I can log on the server Matt is using.
It could be that US and EU gamers are kept apart. We'll see. I am going to try to be online tonight.

If I like it enough after 10 days will I be able to keep my character and convert to the paid version if I wanted to?

Log of my activities (this post will be updated):
22:06 my time - download is at 35% - 7 hour time difference
22:09 my time - download is at 39%
22:16 my time - download is at 47%
22:37 my time - download is at 69%
23:02 my time - download is complete - installing the 'full' game version 2.3.0.7561.

23:11 Installation took its time and after starting it the game wanted to update to 2.3.2.7741 which is downloading right now. Another 5.69 Mb.
Another patch 2.3.3.7799 at 4.38Mb is downloaded and installed. Quite speedy downloads at 1.5Mb/sec. 2.4.0.8089 at 291Mb is downloaded and installed it is now 23:22 and the download is progressing very slowly. I guess this patch is the one a lot of other folk are downloading as well. It says it is going to take 68 minutes to download, hmmm.
0:16 and at 86% download, it says there are 8 minutes left.
0:28 Hmmm and yet another patch to be downloaded and installed - a small one to 2.4.1.8125 - this one is a bit quicker.
And again a patch needs to be downloaded - 2.4.2.8278. Hmm you'd figure that they would update the full download version too so that you don't have to keep on downloading patch after patch. It needs user intervention too - a shame that not all patches are applied automatically.
0:34 These sequential patches sure take a lot of time and patience - 2.4.3.8606 is being downloaded. I remember going through this a while back and giving up on it as it took too long and the server kept timing out. This time downloads are slow but they keep on trickling in. I will persist.
0:41 User intervention has ceased and now the updates follow each other automatically. Aarrghhh 2.4.3 is going to be 'patched' to 3.0.2 Classic final which is a whopping 3.27Gb - didn't I just download that and is that all going to be patched over again?
How utterly unpractical this is. You'd expect the WOW website to provide the end-user with the most recent full download, right?
0:44 26Mb of 3.27Gb done time remaining is about 10 hours - wtf????
Big Brain
01:50 I am going to bed, the download has completely stalled. It is possible to resume the patch. Will try again tomorrow.

Ah well, I guess I won't be trying out WOW 'tonite' anyways. I'll just leave the machine on and see what happened in the morning.

Meeting up on WOW is supposedly very easy. I'll go to the Uther server and try to find Crownspeare - which is Matt's undead character.
I myself am called MarkVark

Well, if it's not for you,

Well, if it's not for you, it's not for you, but a few things to consider--the free trial is pretty stripped down to deal with spammers, so I'm not sure how representative it is of the game. Second, if you've been soloing the whole time, that's probably why you don't enjoy the game. If you don't want to adventure with me, I'd at least join a group using the looking for group tool and see what that's like. The multiplayer aspect is what makes these games so addictive. Although I enjoyed the solo content as well, it just wasn't as much fun as being in a tough dungeon with a good group of guys and gals really having fun. I just can't imagine how much fun it'd be to have IRL friends in there--probably as good as the tabletop D&D days of yore, especially if they had headsets. I bet Bill would be a great party leader, too. (Make a "tankidan" paladin/tank, Bill, and you'll never look back). :P

My advice for new players is to make a mage to start off with. They're easy to play, focus on one thing (damage) and can be very useful to you later in the game when you want to gather resources or such (since they have lots of area-of-effect spells). Mages are also great to have in parties and are very flexible. From there, you basically have three other choices--tank (party leader, tries to force monsters to attack him and can handle damage - warrior, paladin), healer (priest, paladin), DPS (damage per second - mage, rogue) and crowd control (mage, rogue, paladin). Druids and shamans are flexible enough to do pretty much anything, so that's a good choice for a second character. However, they are complex and more difficult to play really well. It's also possible to do other things with the classic types, such as make a "shadow priest" who is DPS, but what's the point. I am a proponent of choose the class that matches your play style; don't try to force fit something.

Another thing is whether you're more interested in PVE or PVP. If you want PVP, I'd pick a rogue, warrior, or druid.

Not sure how the death knight fits into all this.

My US trial does, I get the full server list and all. I think I'm about out of days, and honestly cant see myself paying for it.

But I can say I gave it a shot, and I played about 30-40 hours. It felt very 'solo'y. I mean, I saw lots of other players running around in the world I was in but there was no interaction, I just had to watch what was going on, as resources I wanted were being used by others (collecting cactus apples)... etc.

The Trial doesn't seem to interface with the 'real' WOW. There is no server to choose from. I am on 'a EU server'.

For what it's worth I am a Horde creature called
MarkVark a level 1 Tauren Warrior.

Wow, that's great, Mark! Add my characters to your friend list. I haven't been on incessantly, but I'll try to get on tonight for awhile and see how it goes.

You can start a new

You can start a new character on any server you want. I think they charge you $25 or so to transfer a character. Not worth it if it's a low level (IMO). However, nice thing about doing the death knight is that you start off at level 55 (at least I did; that could be because I already have some high level characters).

If we could get enough people interested we could even have our own Armchair Arcade guild...that'd be sweet.
