Xbox 360 - Shmups coming our way in December

Mark Vergeer's picture

XBOX 360 32x32 pixels updated It seems that a large amount of Japanese Shmups (Shoot 'm ups) have been ported to the xbox 360 and Microsoft is holding some sort of December Shmup fest according to this Kotaku article.

Cool, this does make my heart beat just a tad faster as the Shmup is one of my favorite arcade genres out there. I even spotted a Dodonpachi version amongst the line-up. My xbox 360 December experience is going to be sweet! This better nog be Japan only!

Hmm, I don't know if all of

Hmm, I don't know if all of those will be coming west though, Mark. It sounds like it's the Japanese market first.

Perhaps you'll have to

Perhaps you'll have to settle for A Kingdom for Keflings... none of the shootings, ten times the resource management, plus abusive, kicking Xbox Live avatars.

Japanese Shoot-em-ups

I must say I don't much care for these modern Japanese shooters. It seems they are primarily concerned with throwing a bazillion bullets at you, and you must find a path between the bullets to get ahead, almost like a maze game! They actually seem LESS action-packed than the old, adrenaline-fueled blast-a-thons because of the "maze of bullets" approach. Just my opinion, though.

I'm with you there. I'd rather play a rousing Galaga-style game any day over a bullet shooter, though the better designed and less hectic ones have a certain "poetry" to them in avoiding the bullets. I just hate the games where you're pretty much forced to get hit.

Disagreement

I can see why you think this. With the new shmups there are also paths in between those bullets but often they have some sort of shield function in place and you are bound to get hit.
Perhaps the fact that I like those games is just the mere fact that I seem to be good at it on the 'spinal cord reflex level' for some reason. I am a sucker for colorful sprites and huge explosions and crazy on the screen arcade action.
I like them just as much as Berzerk or those 360 dual stick control games like Geometry Wars - version 2 is actually quite worth it believe you me.
