With all of these "what I'm playing topics" that are so much fun, I thought I'd start something a bit more casual about games that we try and/or play on the current day. Each new comment can just be a quick note about what we're playing and simple impressions. If we want to go into more detail, we can start a new topic or blog post.

I just tried game of the year puzzler Portal, which is part of The Orange Box for the Xbox 360. Interesting and I've played through three of the first level's puzzles. I'm still not quite sure how it works or what to do in it, though, but I imagine that will get revealed to me later along with more abilities. I'll see if I can return to it later.

I also messed some more with Netflix on the 360 yesterday. Fun stuff, but there is a lot of crappy video out there. In particular the girls liked this worse-than-amateur talking dog video.

I dropped Snoopy vs the Red Baron for the Sony PSP back in the mail yesterday, which I rented from GameFly. Not a great game by any stretch of the imagination, barely budget ware. It's a competent combat flight simulator, but it doesn't do anything interesting with the license. Not in the slightest.

Yesterday, Christina and I played the new movie set add-on for the PS3's downloadable game, PAIN, one of my favorites on the platform. We bought that and the David Hasselhoff character, which Christina plays as (I play with the woman with the big, naked butt). So far, the movie set board doesn't seem quite as much fun as the original board or the amusement park setting. Still, you can't help but have fun with the game and the multiplayer is great.

Later, if time permits, I want to spend some time with GameMaker 7 and create a simple shoot 'em up to learn the ins and outs of the program. I'll be following along with the book "The Game Maker's Apprentice".

I didn't bother with the new

I didn't bother with the new Indiana Jones flick, but did greatly enjoy the new Batman movie. It was awesome! I didn't care for Kung Fu Panda, though. Tropic Thunder was hilarious.

Indy Jones and Freespace 2

I was hugely disappointed with the new Indiana Jones movie. As for animated movies, we'll watch Wall-E this weekend. Kung Fu Panda was fun, but the best animated movie I've seen in a while was "Bee Movie."

Back to gaming.... After lurking on the Good Old Games website for a couple of months, I finally broke down and ordered "Freespace 2," the only game they had that I was dying to play. I've been playing it for a few nights, and am having a blast. The graphics are clearly outdated, but the upside is that it plays very smoothly on my outdated PC, which I have to get around to replacing. The "Freespace Open Source Project" has several mods that update the graphics to modern standards (as well as new settings and storylines), but I figured I'd complete the original first before I start experimenting.

It definitely didn't click

It definitely didn't click with me right away. It took about a week before I really got into it, though I wasn't bored. I can't think of any CRPG (even the best ones) that didn't involve some tedium, especially when you're just starting out. It takes awhile to really get into the more interesting aspects of the game. The way it's setup, you get more powers and abilities as you level, so combat will get more sophisticated. You may also want to start a profession and work on that off and on if you get bored. If you get to level 30 or so and are still not having fun, it's definitely not for you.

Also--remember, you also bring stuff to the game. If you don't have the right attitude, no game will be fun. I'd just keep an open mind about it until you know for sure it's not fun for you. I'm sure that's why I didn't like Diablo; kept thinking, "What is all the fuss about?? This sucks!, etc." I should have went into it with a blank slate.

If you guys do try WOW, remember to select "Uther" server and horde characters if you want to adventure with me. :) Also, I don't think the free trial will let you use voice chat; not sure about that, though.

I haven't gotten lich king yet, but may look into it for something to do over Christmas break. Would definitely be fun to explore that new content with some of you guys.

I think the 10 day trial is lich king only right now. Its all I could get to download.
I'm a green orc / horde. I'm on Vek'nilash I think.. getting my butt handed to me on my second quest by jumping blue things. I'm tiring of it already :) I actually find it boring. :( I dont quite know what I expected, but I played for about 2 hours last night.

combat is utterly boring. I klick on the axe icon and wait while the game plays for me. is that it?? It auto attacks after the cooldown time.. its down to who dies first, me or the blue thing.. the hitbox around the character must be huuuge as side stepping attacks or anything does not work and I still get 'hit'.

its just not what I expected, its really simplified, and I went into it thinking it would be I guess, kinda diablo-esque clickfest. I also dont like the control setup lacks mouse look like an FPS, I hate 'turning' with the keys, I only want to strafe.

Wall-E

I didn't get to play anything last night, though I hope to change that tonight (I also want to test my supposedly broken VideoBrain computer from 1978; there may be a way that it works after all). We did watch Wall-E on Blu Ray (we purchased the three disc version with the digital copy) and I must say it was a very, very good film. It was exceptionally well done, particularly for a film with minimal dialog that relies on emoting/actions. Definitely recommended for all ages.

Supposedly the latest Indiana Jones movie will be arriving from Netflix today on Blu Ray. Don't know when we'll get to watch that.

ok, so I fired off the WOW

ok, so I fired off the WOW 10 day trial, and I installed it under WINE on my linux box.
seems to run ok. Ihave it set to use opengl and a window 1024x768 since I dont always like to play fullscreen.

I picked an orc hunter, and I've done the first quest (kill pigs) now I'm doing some kinda hunter thing and killing vile somethings...

it seems to take an age to get anywhere.. I died once and it was an interesting mechanic... took me a while to get back to my corpse.

I dunno if it will suck me in, I already felt the tedium starting.

Pacman CE on the 360

Trying to break the high-score of ChairoNoMe - which is rather insanely high.

Game Paradise (lovely parody vertical shmup) and Bubble Symphony (top notch sequel) on my white Saturn - two classy products.
