If I'd change my mind I'd be obliged to read the book as thoroughly as 'D&D' - and I really can't afford more distractions.

Dungeons & Desktops has been

Dungeons & Desktops has been selling fairly well, I guess, though definitely nothing like a best-seller. It's hard to estimate given Amazon's data, but it looks like it's selling about 3-5 copies a week if my estimates are correct. I notice that every few days the rank jumps up from like 300,000 to 50,000, so I'm guessing that means at least some copies were sold. Whether it's one copy or twelve, though--I'm unable to calculate. One exciting thing about it is that the publisher has said that when all the copies sell out, they'll make a second edition which will correct all the errors and problems with the images. That will increase its value by 50% in my opinion. Still, if the used copies keep accumulating, people will just start buying them--I dread the 50 used copies for a dollar nonsense you see on lots of books. For whatever weirdo reason, the used copies tend to be more expensive than the new ones, though. I haven't figured that one out.

Vintage Games is probably even more analytical than D&D. Although we cover the predecessors, sequels, and spin-offs in some detail, the bulk is spent analyzing the game and what makes it fun and innovative. We also worked hard to tie all the games together, which is one reason all these cuts or shifts is wreaking havoc. One real lesson learned here is always ensure you're within the page count. Bill and I were killing ourselves to get this thing finished, and as it turns out we could have been finished three or four months earlier if we'd known about the word count issues.

Thanks

Personally, I doubt that I'll order the book.

The reason? Large parts of the book are of no interest to me as I don't play certain genres anymore and I've already accumulated more knowledge than I need or want. Any yes, I can make a pretty well informed choice thanks to the "advertising" on this site! ;-)

Nothing to do with you guys - I still love 'Dungeons & Desktops' for several reasons (analysis & reviews, very often confirmation of my thoughts and the closing of a few gaps I had myself).

In fact Matt's CRPG book is as useful for me as the books I bought in the last few months on art, history and geographics (not that I have much book money, anyway...).

take care,

I would vote for...

...can I still get a signed copy?

And I actually talked to a friend about it during the Houston Area Arcade Expo this past weekend, and he is most likely going to pick it up.

I didn't vote

The choice I would have made, "I'm going to pre-order it soon!" is not one of the options, and none of the other options fit, so I didn't vote. Near the end of the month, I will pre-order it.

That's why I'd love to hear

No kidding! I have to admit, I'm baffled by how someone who regularly visits this site wouldn't be interested in the book. I hope it doesn't have anything to do with the cuts.

Well, technically there aren't any cuts, they're still getting 2x the size of a normal book in full color without a single piece of missing content we delivered. 350 pages are just in book form and roughly the same amount is in Web form. Maybe it's just the subject matter. After all, we were rather lukewarm on the idea ourselves prior to actually writing it. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, obviously, I'm just more curious as to the why. I want to know if there's a misperception out there about the book or something or its simply they don't like the book's concept or what-have-you. Obviously stuff like that is quite important for this book and future books.

Detailed feedback if you can...

For those who put "I doubt it." or "Definitely not." in the poll, I'd be curious why so the issue can be addressed for future books or, more specifically in this case, we can make sure that something about the book is not being miscommunicated by the publisher or our own advertising. Thanks for the help!
