Vista is actually more like Windows ME

Perhaps it is even better to compare Vista with Windows Me. That was just an intermediary Windows release that had a lot of faults, including a huge memory leak which made it inherently unstable. It was marketed to be something of a Windows 2K consumer version but ended up being nothing good. People playing video games stuck with Windows98 and only upgraded when Windows XP came out.
Vista shares a similar faith if you ask me. It will end up being not really good and bloated. But I am not sure if Windows 7 will be the XP of the future.

Vista and Windows 7

I've been reading here and there that MS is getting set to roll out its new Windows 7, which may turn out to be to Vista what XP was to 95. At least, that's what I'm hoping.

I don't see why the problems with Vista couldn't be fixed with some sensible patches, though. The main thing is the irritating security clearances you get. Why not just make that a setting you can adjust?

OpenGL broken on my Vista machine

OpenGL is broken on my Vista setup. That is, it will run when I switch to the classic Windows Theme. It just won't when I am running the Aero interface.

- ParaJVE
- OpenGL plugins on epsxe
- OpenGL games and demos

are all affected...

There's tons of reports on the internet about OpenGL support on Vista and they way it is implemented. Shitty Vista strikes again....

Mind you on my wife's Vista Home Premium Laptop the emulator works without a hickup. With the same directX, Java updates but with a different graphics card - an integrated Intel one - instead of my Nvidia cards.

Vectrexmad - you're truly a Vectrax Mad One!

Vectrexmad, great magazine by the way! - all AA readers should go check out those online mags too!
I saw your post on Franck's site as well. Luckily I do have an older Windows XP machine on which it runs flawless. The overlays, the ability to use gamepad controllers and define the controls and the sheer fluidity of the emulation makes this the best Vectrex emulator out there. I agree with you 100% on that. The other emulators are old and don't offer the versatility Franck is offering with his emulator.
I am going to test the emulator on my wife's Vista machine as well and see if that makes any difference.

Version 0.50 ran beautifully on my Mac, Windows XP machines. My new Vista machine doesn't like the JOGL libraries that much. The Java binarie is working - I have sound and can manipulate the menu settings but the on screen display just won't work. Nor will the official JOGL demos like the 'Gears demo'.

Mark, its a pity you can't

Mark,
its a pity you can't use it in Vista, but as you can see from the following link (http://www.videogametrader.com/vgtrader/index.htm ) and opening issue #8 that I'm a real fan of ParaJVE. Of course it can't beat the real Vectrex hardware, but as an emulator I think it represents the best one out there - and those are/were my thoughts before the release of the even better version v0.6.0.
I got into Vectrex by first using this emulator. The fact that Franck is able to offer support (the other emulators seem to be quite old) is another positive factor for this emulator.

In communication with Franck - the emulator author

I am in communication with Franck, the emulator author. It seems that on my Vista system then Java OpenGL libraries are not working properly. On similar hardware running the same directX, Nvidia drivers on Windows XP pro SP3 the emulator works great.
Windows XP Pro SP3, Nvidia 6600 GT AGP card with the same drivers and the same directX setup as above, including the same Java Updates.
Lovely overlay option and it works with your joypads too!

If there are users out there with Vista machines who want to give it a try we could report back to him.

Version 0.5 has the same problems

I've contacted the author.

Bonjour,
When I tried to run the 0.60 version of the emulator on Vista Ultimate it will have sound with the various included games and the menu system but there are no graphics shown in the emulator window. The drop down menu's will 'stick' on the emulator window that is they will remain displayed after you've selected them and have moved on. Probably because the graphics-window isn't updated on my system.
Version 0.50 also has the same problems.

Vista Ultimate 6.0.6001 Service Pack 1 Build 6001 32 bit.
Intel Core 2 4400 2.0 Ghz
DirectX 10.0 - including the august 2008 SDK update
Nvidia 8600GT 512Mb RAM
Nvidia driver version 178.24
Sun Java for Windows Version 6, update 10

Salut, Mark Vergeer

Ahh thats a real shame about

Ahh thats a real shame about you seeing no graphics :(
I can't understand why its not working - on my machine it worked first time, and my graphics card is a lower spec than yours :- NVIDIA GeForce 6600 LE.
You running on Windows XP?
Might be worth contacting the ParaJVE author direct to see if he knows why its not working on your configuration.

Sound is great but no visuals

The sound is great - sounds even better from my PC speakers than from the original Vectrex speaker that always has a little white noise coming out of it.
But there's no graphics whatsoever. Just a square window in which graphics are supposed to appear.
Nvidia 8600 GT PCIe, latest Nvidia drivers
DirectX 10.x including the latest DEVkit files.
