Hardy Boys Review Up

Matt Barton's picture

FYI--Adventure Classic Gaming has just posted my review of The Hardy Boys: The Hidden Theft. I know we've been talking a lot about the Nancy Drew games lately, so I thought you might enjoy reading my review of that other brand of teen detective novels. In short, I didn't like it as much as the Nancy Drew games, but it's not bad and the franchise has great potential. What shocked me, though, was that Xpec didn't integrate more action segments, which would seem indispensable for any game based on the Hardy Boys!

Childhood Heroes

If it weren't for you I wouldn't know neither Nance Drew nor The Hardy Boys. I guess they are relatively unknown in Germany.

Funnily, my German childhood heroes came mostly from foreign authors: Mark Twain (Tom Sawyer and the cooler Huckleberry Finn), Astrid Lindgren, the famous Swedish children's book author (the "Kalle Blomquist" series - also a young amateur detective - is called "Bill Bergson" in the US) and most importantly the "The Three Investigators" series (called in Germany "The Three Question Marks" - fantastic translation!):

The Three Investigators is still immensely popular in Germany and a multi-million Euro expensive movie was made two years ago (filmed in South Africa, completely in English and with American child actors - sounds a bit like "Stupid German Movie Money" but it actually was a German studio located in my hometown Hamburg, which produced the movie).

A sequel is apparently in the works at the moment.

The Three Investigators

Wow, I used to love the three investigators as a kid! I even remember the Alfred Hitchcock association.

I wonder if they'll ever do anything like that for the US market?

"TTI-movies"

The movies seem to be produced for the international market so I think they'll pop up sooner or later on DVD in the US and elsewhere.
A family sunday afternoon in front of the TV set may be a good excuse... ;-)

I've never heard of the 3

I've never heard of the 3 investigators.

I grew up reading Hardy Boys as a kid. It was always a treat, but of course you outgrow those pretty quickly. I moved on pretty early to "real" novels, though some of the teen stuff I read was actually so good my whole family (including grandparents) read them. My favorite of all time is Firebrats, which is about two teenagers who survive a nuclear holocaust and have to deal with the aftermath. I'm like --- WTF --- haven't these been made into movies or games? My whole family would wait anxiously for the next novel, then devour them in days. :)

If you get a chance, check them out! You won't be disappointed, that's for sure.
