Good Old Games

So I got my Good old Games http://gog.com invite today, created my account and checked it out.

I'm guessing its going to replace current game download sites (that I could never get to work with its funky client etc)...

DRM free game downloads seem pretty cool, they have Fallout 1 + 2, apart from that its a really small catalogue right now..

A bit scary that Stonekeep is rated 4.5/5 stars!!

for $12 you can download legally fallout 1+2 and get pdf manuals and everything.

Anyone else have a GoG account?

According to several sources, the Freespace 2 source code was released as freeware (at least the source code was). I loved Freespace, but never played Freespace 2. Recently I discovered that there's a cool enthusiast community that has used the FS2 engine to create several FS-like games, and they all look very cool! Nay, not cool... AWESOME! I think you'll like this page!!!!

There are several FS2 games that look very cool, including games based on Star Wars, Star Trek, Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica, and Wing Commander! Judging from the screenshots, these games look state-of-the-art! This is a must-view site if you have any interest in these types of games!

I agree, if they remove the hassle from the equation, it'd be well worth the cash, especially for Vista.

Copy protection?

It all looks very nice, easy, and reasonably priced (thanks for the review and pics, Mark!). However, if I were to download a game from this site, what's to stop me from giving the downloaded game file to my friends or uploading it to some pirate site? Is there any form of copy protection, or is it all based on good faith with the customer?

Personally, I have no pirated software on my machine (except maybe some emulator roms for dead platforms), and would not consider spreading pirated software. However, considering how prevalent pirated software is, it sounds like GoG is basically prepackaging a game that can easily be pirated!

Nope, there is no form of copy protection. There is nothing from stopping me spreading the games around but I will not. The games are dead cheap and the service you get is worth it.

I agree and I wouldn't do it either, but you know there are people who will. It's a shame they couldn't implement at least some type of simple check or something, though I honestly don't know what that would be that would still keep all the benefits of portability and true ownership.

A few years back, I tried a native Windows version of Descent, created by the community. It worked quite well as I remember. You just drop in the files from the original game. The nicest thing was hardware 3D graphics in high res. Still a good looking game that can make you feel sick - as it was probably intended to!
