This video from "Yahoo! Playback" describes the problems the PS3 might have this Christmas season. Also, there's some other cool game news as well.

Believe it or not, Bill, a coworker of mine planned (plans?) to buy a PS3 TONIGHT(!!!!!), and your info was quite helpful to me in giving him advice. Thanks to you, I was able to steer him from the "40GB" model and towards a higher model, since backward compatibility is a concern of his. (I mentioned this guy in the "Madden Football" thread; he's the one whose main concerns are "Madden Football" and "Blu-Ray.")

I hope he is satisfied with the (provided by you) advice I gave him. He's also asking me about "Wi-Fi" access. I told him he'd need a router from his computer, but I better research it more before I advise him further. Wi-fi is probably a ways off, though... Thank you for your info; it really did help me (and my friend).

The good thing is Wi-Fi is built into the PS3 and it works with all types of security schemes (unlike the Nintendo DS, for instance). It can connect to anything any other wireless device can, like a laptop.

Backwards compatibility

Sony initially had full hardware backwards compatibility in the PS3, meaning that you had near perfect compatibility with all region-specific PS2 and PS1 games. Shortly after launch, they introduced software-based backwards compatibility, like the Xbox 360 has. And like the Xbox 360, compatibility is in the high 80%+ percentile in most cases. This was no doubt done for cost reasons. Anyway, all PS3 models, except for the "low end" 40GB model ($399) have software-based backwards compatibility. Why the 40GB model doesn't is beyond me and certainly seems arbitrary.

It isn't clearly printed on

It isn't clearly printed on the box - so there's no way of knowing whether your new PS3 is PS2 capable. The latest generation isn't.

PS3 Backwards Compatibility

Regardless, that's why quite a while back I ended up getting a good 60GB PS3 model off of eBay, because that was the only one with the hardware backwards compatibility and the only way to ensure the least amount of hassle.

PS3 not backwards compatible?

I forgot about the removal of the PS2 backwards compatibility and almost went out and got a PS3 his weekend but your remarks stopped me dead in my tracks Bill. Sony should reintroduce it!

What?!?!?! Why the heck would Sony remove PS2 backwards compatibility? That doesn't make much sense!

I understand it's a bit risky, but it was the only way in my case to get a system with hardware backwards compatibility. Turned out to be a good deal in all ways. Normally I wouldn't do it, but by the time I was ready, Sony was no longer selling a unit with hardware backwards compatibility, which would have been inconvenient for me (though I do have a PS2 hooked up full-time on the basement TV).

You can always do what I did and get one off of eBay with the hardware backwards compatibility. Not sure how many are still in circulation though or if they made it to Europe.
