Hello, I'm Cesare from Italy. I want to try some old CRPG, especially Gates of Delirium and Legends 1/2. I'm using the standard Ubuntu Xmess package. There's something weird in this program: how may I exit form it? I have to use xkill to close the window and the program itself! :-|

I'm also some troubles about TI99/4A emulation: games don't want to load... maybe I need something like an XB (extended basic) cartridge image to load Legends1/2?

Yeah, I worked with another fellow who was also using XMess. I think he got it working, but it was screwing up the files a lot. I had always been using Windows MESS and I'd never seen the issues he described. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, but given that I was somewhat aware that XMess may be a lost cause, didn't want to have to say "Well, maybe you should try Windows..." :)

Hope you find the game fun!

Adam

Windows does it better...

Legends on Xmess quits immidiately, instead on Windows version of mess works great. I'm sorry to say that, but there are a few things that Windows do better...

* WinUAE works better than UAE and eUAE, and it's faster
* ePSXe is faster on Windows, even using only the software rendering
* playback of avi/mvk/etc is better on Windows, even thank you to K-Lite Mega Codec Pack
* mess itself on Windows is better (and newer, it's at version 0.123)

I'm not a true Windows enthusiast, but I'll switch to it again... >__<

Your avatar is intriguing

Nizza, Europei supplementari che frequentano questa Website/Forum/Tribuna. Un benvenuto in ritardo! Ho sperimentato con MESS, ma solo su Microsoft Windows. Non posso aiutarlo con gli errori di Linux SDL.

Let's keep the international folk coming! Welcome, although a little delayed from my part! I have little experience with MESS-SDL-Linux. Sorry :-(

I live in a small town in Sicily, Modica ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modica ) and retrogaming is not so common here. I have really few time to dedicate to old glories, but I'm happy play them when I can!!!

Wow, that place is beautiful. So, so beautiful. I am so jealous!

I think a lot of people here have a similar story. It all started either with Ultima or those gold box games from SSI. :) Although I like action games, there's no comparing them to a good ol' RPG or adventure game.

Yes, you will need the Extended Basic cartridge in order to play Legends. You just assign the Island disk (or disk 1 for Legends 2) to DSK1 and it will auto-run when you select Extended Basic from the main menu.

I was going to provide a link to a Mess Support area for the TI-99/4a that a fellow assembled which had a wide number of cartridges and disks in MESS-readable form, but the site appears to be down. (Hopefully not gone!) If you need the ROM files for Extended Basic, just give me an e-mail address and I'll send you the files.

Also, let me know if you experience some graphic issues or oddities with the games... I discovered with a friend that the 1.1 disks on the TI Game Shelf appeared to have some problems with xmess and Classic99. (The regular MESS worked fine, oddly enough.)

Welcome to the site, Mazin. I hope you will share your stories about classic gaming with us! I'm wondering what the retrogaming scene is like in Italy. I haven't ever been there, but am a huge fan of Roman history.
