Guys / Girls, wouldn't it be nice to have some sort of chat application on the site? Shane has a very nice one at Retrogaming Radio. Could we install something like that on here? Wouldn't minde some real-time discussions with others every now and then. ;-)

Let's go for it

If we can figure out how to do something like that, I think it would be a good offering.

Shane's chat application

The application Shane is using somehow integrates with the board, when you're logged into the forums and you choose the chat option you'll be logged in the chat app with the forum login-name. Don't know about it being a bandwidth hog though, the flash client is executed off-server on the users computers and the only thing running on the server would be a small application that the flash apps on the user side interact with. Transmitted data will only consist of control-strings and ascii text. Not much bandwidth is lost there I think. This is way different from the 'chat' / message feature we have/had on the classic Armchair Arcade side.

So many free options. Gmail springs to mind.

If it were an offsite application that could be embedded on here like you can do with YouTube videos, that might solve the issues with bandwidth. We could certainly try, as active users are a relatively low volume (most of our 25,000+ monthly hits are lurkers). We could always turn it off if it proves to be an issue.
