Lemonade Amiga CD32 emulation on Windows

On Lemonade - thanks Oldschool!
Lemonade Initial ConfigurationLemonade Initial Configuration
Lemonade starts very promising but wants specific versions of Kickstart roms - probably to ensure maximum compatibility with its game-database. My own Dumped kickstart roms may not be the most compatible in the world, but a quick search on google enables you to find the right Kickstart versions.

After that you have set the kickstart versions the emulator can scan a source folder for compatible game files (adf disks) - even from within zipped disks - you can also define a specific target directory where compatible/playable or recognized game files should be copied to for later playing. Then all you need to do is select the desired screen resolution and joystick and off you go. When a game is recognized as playable it is launchable from Lemon's Game Database Screen. The Lemon site is also able to provide game-screen-shots to be used with the Game Database. The whole thing really reminds me a great deal of the C64 Game-database Gamebase that is out there - this basically offers similar functionality but then for C64 games!

The sweet part is that Lemonade also provides Amiga CD32 emulation, so I bet you can just pop in one of your AmigaCD32 cds and off you go!

Whoops, my Vista machine doesn't like Lemonade that much. The install threw up two errors, but the install went ok for the rest. Starting up WinUAE from within Lemonade on my Vista machine won't work though. It will start a WinUAE process but the WinUAE window won't appear on my system. I will try it on Windows XP next. WinUAE on its own does run on Vista though - but it refuses to be launched properly by Lemonade on my system.

Preliminary conclusions:
- Lemonade is NOT compatible with my Vista Ultimate configuration.
- check back for my results with a Windows XP machine.

On Lemonade - part three - overall conclusions

On Lemonade - part three

Overall conclusions:
- A great tool for using ADF games, sadly not so much for CD32 games according to my experiences with the utility. Running CD32 games requires about just as much fiddling with settings as WinUAE does. As the latest WinUAE also features a quicklaunch option where the user can basically quickly select a wide range of predefined Amiga machine settings and boot that specific emulated Amiga - provided the user has the correct TOSEC Kickstarts. I have been successful in getting WinUAE up and running in CD32-mode without much problems and it seems that WinUAE might be easier to use than Lemonade for accessing the WinUAE CD32 compatible mode.
- The program itself has an easy to use interface, great search options. A must if you have a lot of adf game files you can use the database function. Be sure to have the adf's named correctly according to the TOSEC Naming convention otherwise you won't get very far with Lemon.
- Download the screenshots from the Lemon server as they provide a great addition to the interface and you'll be able to recognize a game far easier with those little pictures included
- It is still a beta and does NOT run properly on Windows Vista, it does function on Windows XP. I hope the authors will make this front-end Vista-compatible as it is a great tool!

On Lemonade - part two

On Lemonade - part two

Lemonade 2nd error also on Windows XP ProfessionalLemonade 2nd error also on Windows XP Professional
Alas the second error was also displayed when I tried to install Lemonade on my Windows XP Professional system
Perhaps it is a Flash-plug-in related issue? I have good hopes the beta Lemonade might function properly on my XP system though. Let's see. Well YES it does function properly.

Loading some compatible adf-based games from within the game database functions well and it closely resembles just shoving in a 3.5" disk into the Amiga drive and just boot & play. It - for a large part - takes away fiddling with the configuration files on WinUAE.

More preliminary conclusions:
- Lemonade really doesn't work on the Vista machines I have access to.
- Lemonade does function properly on the XP machine, despite the FLASH.OCX installation error (I pressed ignore to continue installation). It simply is a breeze selecting and running the game you want.
- But Lemonade doesn't make for easy CD32 emulation just yet. Just selecting the CD32 configuration from the Quick-start option that is found in the first tab of Lemonade main screen doesn't automatically get me into the well known CD32 welcome screen, nor is my CD-game recognized. And from the game-database menu it is not possible to launch the CD32 game because they are listed as - unplayable - . One can of course change this by fiddling with the settings and switching the game to playable, but that rather makes it very much like fiddling with WinUAE.

Turrican - No "super" version?

Thanks for these tips, Mark and Oldschoolgamer. I've managed to download Captive 2 for CD32, and I'm really eager to give that a chance. I had the ADF version, but I'm guessing it'll be a lot easier to manage with the CD-ROM format instead of all those floppies.

I also noticed there's a version of Turrican I and II for CDTV. That's REALLY got me curious. I wonder what they added to the CDTV version? Possibly an enhanced version of the legendary soundtrack?

Sadly, it looks like a typical conversion: copy data from disk to CD, repackage: http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=34677 and http://hol.abime.net/hol_search.php?find=turrican

I hope to have my contributions up starting later this week or early next. I'll of course be focusing on the easy part, the real hardware... ;-)
