A Feature on Energy Drinks

Matt Barton's picture

I'm sure I'm not the only one here who foolishly bought a 12-pack of that Halo 3 Mountain Dew that was out a few months ago (haven't really seen it since). Of course, I didn't notice any effect it had on my gaming, though it apparently doesn't really rank as a true energy drink. Thankfully, Kotaku is running a great feature on energy drinks, ranking them by taste and buzz. While I probably still won't rush out to buy one of these, it is nice to have a survey of what's available.

My bro-in-law swears by Balls (spelling?), but I have tried a sampling of these myself and did prefer the Monster. Then again, I'm not adverse to drinking plain black coffee, which is probably better for you than all this sugar or artificial sweetener anyway.

Any energy drink nuts out there? Let us know your opinions!

Energy Drinks

I'd be curious what other people do too. I'm not a big concoction guy, save for protein shakes (Labrada Lean Body with Creatine and sometime Glutamine), which I have for my morning breakfast on weekdays. Otherwise I pretty much stick with water, with the occasional iced tea, lemonade or fruit drink. The only time I occasionally have anything stimulant-based is when I take fat burning supplements, which is usually only in the summers. A lot of people come to rely on boosts and I don't really like the idea of needing anything, so I make do with my own natural energy reserves whenever possible. Of course I do pass out asleep from fatigue pretty early at night these days, so I wouldn't necessarily be adverse to trying something non-carbonated (don't like carbonation for the gas factor) once in a while I suppose...

I don't drink caffeine or sugar anymore and feel all the better for it. Maybe giving up carbonation is the next challenge? If nothing else at least I would fart less!

It must be national energy drink month or something: http://www.oxmonline.com/article/xbox-soapbox/energy-quest/energy-quest-...

My 2 cents

I feel the need to comment on the energy drink populous.
Funny that now that I am surrounded with younger people, Yes I am getting older.
I see that the majority of people are hooked or desire the energy drinks.
I had a gen z (or whatever they are called) friend that would buy or get anything that was claimed to be cool. You know what ever maxim or whatever had a “Cool” look to it add.
I never liked the sweetness of any energy drink I do like coffee. Never needed it but like the taste. Too much is not good!
To each their own but I will admit the younger people seem to NEED a boost.
Guess I am too old after all.

sweet

I think the youngsters like it because of the syrupy sweetness. They can't do coffee without dumping a ton of sugar, creamers, "flavor shots" and what not. You can't even taste the coffee by the time they get through with it.

To me, there's just something macho about going black, no sugar. :)

I was thinking also of people who get "wussy" drinks at the pub. It's the same crowd that gets the double mocha strawberry or whatever the heck it is at the starbucks. These folks have to have some sort of pink sugary sweet concoction; can't even handle a good beer, much less an honest whiskey or scotch. I'd be embarrassed to be seen drinking some of those frufru drinks. Then again, I'd be embarrassed to be seen with a Bud Light or, worse, Ultra Light, but I prefer real beer. :)

I don't smoke, but if I did, you wouldn't see me with any kind of "Lite." If you're going to kill your lungs and offend other people, at least make it a Red. Or, better yet, go for a quality cigar or pipe.

pipe would be nice, I like the aroma. but really, real men only chew and spit. get that wad of fibreglass laced tobaccy and stuff it alongside your jaw!

snuff is more for the froufrou guys than real men...

LOL! Okay, that's got to be the funniest thing I've seen. Good ol' dip.

Is it possible to dip and smoke at the same time?

This is going to end up in an Everclear shooting match. :)
