Best Amiga and C-64 Games

The right way to do top games on a system lists...

That's exactly what I'm saying, useful for now. Wouldn't it be far more valuable to tell a modern gamer to check out EA's "Mail Order Monsters" on the C-64 than Atarisoft's "Pac-Man", even if the latter is a good game? Frankly if an arcade port were different enough from the original to warrant distinction, I'd be fine with it, but if a game's calling card is how close it is to the arcade game, aren't we doing a disservice to the platform? It doesn't really show off what's special about the platform, only that a good programmer happened to make good use of the system's abilities. Someone who was not a fan of the platform might go, "Dig Dug"?, ho hum, I've played that a million times, why should I bother with the C-64? But if they see Datasoft's "Mancopter" on the C-64 list, they might be intrigued by the title enough to check out the actual game and discover a truly inventive Joust and racing game offshoot. That's the point. Again, with systems like the C-64 and Amiga with an embarrassment of classic games, it blows my mind that games like "Bubble Bobble" get included. I'd rather see those on the "Best C-64 (or Amiga) Arcade Conversions" list.

Originals, Exclusives, etc.

I've thought about that question too, Bill. It does seem lame to see games listed in these "Top 25 Lists" that originated on other systems; these folks are just playing ports, and sometimes not very good ports. Seeing "Defender of the Crown" on the C64 list is telling. Who would willingly play that version when they could play it on the Amiga? Definitely not me. On the other hand, there are countless Apple II originals that were significantly enhanced for other platforms (C-64, later the Atari ST and Amiga, for instance).

The arcade ports can be a tricky matter. I have played Bubble Bobble extensively on computer, but have only played it in the arcade maybe three times. I didn't even realize that "Green Beret" was an arcade game until I ran into it in the arcade years later. I guess what I'm driving at here is that the "arcade port" issue changes once you get into the mid 1980s and past the "arcade fever" of the Donkey Kong/Pac-Man era. In some cases, I'd say the "ports" of these games were at least as important as the arcade release. This is definitely clear with games like "Tetris," for whom the arcade use is a peanut compared to the exposure it got on other platforms.

I guess I'd want to see a different list, such as "Top 25 Exclusives for Amiga" or at least "Top 25 Original Amiga games" or some such. It's relatively difficult to track down such lists compared to the more general ones.

Arcade Ports - Don't Belong?

In my opinion, arcade ports like Bubble Bobble, Pac-Man, Dig Dug, etc., should be tossed out. Why they may be nice conversions, they're not original games made for the system. I don't necessarily want to discount ports from other computers or videogame systems, but arcade ports seem unnecessary. Frankly, of the thousands of games released for each platform, there's no reason to take the "easy" way out.

My ideal list would be games that originated on the platform first ONLY. Second choice would be the addition of games that, while ported from other non-arcade platforms, saw a definitive or exceptional conversion on the system. What do you think?
