Exclusive VCF East Audio - Hear Commodore Engineers Chuck Peddle, Bil Herd, Bob Russell, Dave Haynie and more!

I have made the zip files available of the WMA-converted (downgraded) WAV recordings from some of the panel seminars at the 2007 version of VCF East (4.0) in Wall Township at the InfoAge Learning Center, from Saturday, June 9, 2007. There are some true gems in there, so if you have ANY interest in the origins of personal computing and Commodore, I suggest you give these a listen!

The panel's star was legend Chuck Peddle, inventor of the famous MOS Technology 6502 chip, used in a wide variety of classic single-board computers and in microcomputers such as the Commodore PET, C-64 and the Apple II. Peddle was piped in via videoconference (Skype) from Sri Lanka. Multi-generational Commodore engineers Bil Herd, Bob Russell, and Dave Haynie were live onsite.

The recordings:
[Right now, these are only available for a limited number of downloads from "YouSendIt" (each file, 7 days or 100 downloads before it gets deleted). Let me know if it doesn't work after a while and I'll try to re-upload the files.]
ZIP FILE I (~82.5MB, downgraded WMA; Ignore Recording 2, which was accidentally included) -
Recording 3 - Chuck Peddle videoconferenced in from Sri Lanka
Recording 4 - Getting Chuck back after some downtime
Recording 5 - Onsite Commodore engineers talking (Bil Herd, Bob Russell, and Dave Haynie)

ZIP FILE II (~52.5MB, downgraded WMA) -
Recording 6 - Onsite Commodore engineers continued
Recording 7 - Information on Camp Evans (Fred Carl)

Again, Evan Koblentz and the other great people who put this all together need to be commended for putting together such an impressive panel. Don't forget to contact them for donations, especially those mentioned in Recording 7.

I have not bothered to edit these, so it's like you were sitting right there in the audience, warts and all! By the way, my impromptu recording device? My Cingular 8125 Windows Mobile phone on my lap!

(NOTE 1: If someone can recommend an audio hosting site, I will get these up there for easier access!)

(NOTE 2: I will make the photos available via either Flickr or Photo Bucket very soon!)

You're very welcome. By the way, I realized yesterday that I accidentally included recording 2 in the first zip file. Obviously that shouldn't have been in there. The index I included in the blog post is accurate, though.

I also relistened to most of the Chuck Peddle talk, which will be immensely helpful in getting the Commodore PET and IBM PC entries in my book even more accurate (for example, he clears up why the first Commodore computer was named PET and the reality around IBM's failure to secure an initial CP/M license and how Gates was able to capitalize).

I see you already got his name for Recording 7.. :) He is the director of http://www.infoage.org/ and without him, there would not have been an Infoage and is the driving force to where it is today!

I am sorry I did not get to meet you Bill! :( I was the long-haired guy up in front trying to keep the Skype connection working..

Cheers,

Believe me, I know, it's never easy. I tried to introduce myself to people I've talked to online in the past, but I only did that with people whose names I overheard called (like Vince Briel) or who I happened to recognize.

No worries. Bill Degnan of the MARCH club has agreed to host the audio. The good news is that now I can zip the audio into one file. My FTP is not working here at work, so I'll try to get this done later tonight and will post here once Bill is able to provide the link.

Audio is live again

For those looking for the audio, it now has what should be a permanent home here. When Bill D. and Evan K. set up a page linking to it, I'll change the link, but for now that will get you straight to the file (be sure to visit their main page at http://www.marchclub.org too). Enjoy and let's hear those comments!
