New Site Design

Hullo everyone! Its been too long, I was a member of the old site. :-) I'm wondering about a few things about this new site. Why did you change the look? I thought the old site looked neat. The new one is cool too, of course, but just seems a little plain and messy. I'm not complaining, though! I don't think the logo works well with the rest of the site. It's the only part that is yellow.

I'm also wondering what happened to the issues. Are you still planning on releasing any more issues? The blogs are o.k., of course, and many are like mini articles. I also like the retro reviews. Very nice! But I also liked the articles in the issues. ;-)

I hope nobody thinks I'm being rude here! I am just curious about the changes and wondering what will happen to this excellent website. Is the same team working on it from the old site?

Proper file in your inbox Bill!

Bill,
If all went well you've now got the proper file in your inbox. The file above had some residual pixels left.
Say perhaps with a little shadow underneath the logo to give it more of a floating feel like the other parts of the new style.....?

Cheers, Mark

Agreed

Definitely! Let's get that new logo up ASAP. Looks much better than the old one. Good work, Mark!

I did a little retouching on the logo....

Matt, Bill, I did a little retouching on the logo, perhaps this looks a little better. At least I do think so...

Garland AA Logo - retouched completelyGarland AA Logo - retouched completely

This is the retouched logo, here's what it could look like on top....

With the resizing of the original logo using interpolation, the transparent color that has changed a little is showing up. Easily fixed with retouching or by increasing the tolerance to the background transparency.

New Style

Hi guys -- I really dig the look of the new site. Very clean and professional looking. It's true that the logo doesn't really work with the new style, but it's not really a big problem. Overall it's pretty good. I like it.

Arrghghgh...Everybody is a

Arrghghgh...Everybody is a critic. In all seriousness, though, I don't think anyone is 100% happy with the aesthetics of the site, but we're really more interested in generating good content than lots of flash and pizazz. As we've said many times, you could have the best looking site in the world, and it still be absolute crappage. Admittedly, this site might lack the polish of the old one, but we had a professional graphics designer working with us then. Unfortunately, he ditched us, and none of us are really trained in this area.

At any rate, I'm not quite sure I understand your criticism about the logo. If it's the only thing that is yellow, won't that help draw the eye towards it? Also, the design is supposed to be reminiscent of old-school computer and video game fonts. It was actually the winner of a contest we had several months back. If you have a design you'd like to show us, please feel free. It's pretty easy to change the layouts with Drupal. Why not get creative instead of just critical?

As for the issues/blogs thing, again that is an old debate here. The problem with the old setup was that it took so long to get the issues out, that by the time they did, it was old news. We are planning to release issues, but these will be compilations of the best posts we make here, though perhaps with a bit of freshening up and the like. There has always been talk of releasing a printed version as well, though any time-consuming stuff like that will have to wait until after Bill and I finish our book.

Welcome back! You're not

Welcome back! You're not rude at all, great that you ask these questions actually. We changed the site because the software underneath the site running it was creating a lot of problems.
The new site caused quite a few issues too but seems to be working a little better than it did a while ago.
As for the team working on the site, well there have been quite a few changes as time went by. But you'll still recognize quite a few of the editors. Check out the about us option to see if you see familiar people.
Cheers and please feel free to post your own review!
