Rob (Daviau), Fallout is a classic CRPG, and it's free! But pretty much everything that turns you off about CRPG's is there in spades in Fallout. I guess that's why it's a "classic" in the CRPG field; it is (by most accounts) a CRPG done right.
If you don't like turn-based combat, Fallout has a rather deep and complex turn-based combat system.
If you don't like non-linear gameplay, Fallout is very non-linear.
If you don't like slow gameplay, Fallout has lot's of "slow" parts where you're walking around (exploring?) with no perceivable threat.
Well, I could go on, but even I didn't get very far into Fallout. I admit I didn't give it much of a chance, but the first "settlement" I arrived at seemed dry and barren, which fits the premise of the game, but I found it rather uninteresting. I suppose (hopefully) I'll go back to the game eventually, but for now, my gaming plate is full.
