Yes, "Sandbox Strategy" is a great way to put it. So is "Virtual Lego's". You can play the game with monsters on or off. You can play it as a survival game or as a construction sandbox game. Most of the confusion, I think, is because the programmer started selling the game before the game was really all there. He's slowly adding and fine-tuning elements as time goes on... that being said, what you get for your money right now is more than worth the cost of admission.
I remember back in the day when I first played Civ and I figured I'd kick it around for a few hours and see what all the fuss was about.. next thing I knew, the suns coming up. Thats the same experience I had with Minecraft.
