I did play "Deus Ex" several years ago, but I have little recollection of it. I don't recall reading the manual (and in fact I'm not sure the game came with a manual(?)), and so I played it basically as a standard FPS, running around blasting everything. The true depth of the game never occurred to me, and after a week or two of playing, I set it aside.
Inspired by this episode of "Matt Chat," I dug up my old copy of "Deus Ex" and reinstalled it. With the true depth of the game made clear in this week's episode, I knew I had to give the game another go, now that I understand that it's not supposed to be played like "Doom."
Well, I didn't even make it past the training mission before I got frustrated. The problem? Stealth. I'm not a big fan of "stealth" games, the crawling around and hiding part. The problem is that the stealth games I've played are more like "puzzle" games to me, timing your movements against the robotic "enemy" movements. The stealth sequences always frustrate me in games.
It might just be my mood recently, because I know I made it much further into the game than this the last time I played it! But not making it past even the "training" stealth portion of the game makes me a pretty pathetic gamer!
Ok, enough griping. I gotta get back to playing the game..... I'm sure it will pick up after I beat the training mission. Everything I saw in Matt Chat makes me want to experience the level of depth this game offers.
