Perhaps a piece on how certain RPG's have shaped other genres throughout the years? The Ultima games for example exploring free worlds and breaking away from the usual hack n slash of the time. Or how about the Baldurs Gate games which showed good stories and characters are possible in a game world.

A lot of RPG elements have sneaked their way into the likes of shooters, racing games etc so wouldn't mind hearing some discussion about how you guys think they have changed gaming.

Thanks, Lorfarius, I like that idea a lot. I've thought a lot about how RPGs have influenced other RPGs, but not so much about how they've infected other genres. There are so many hybrid games out there, pretty much all the way back to the beginning.

I think the main thing that people enjoy about RPGs is actually the Protestant work ethic rendered in code.

It is based upon the notion that the Calvinist emphasis on the necessity for hard work as a component of a person's calling and worldly success and as a sign of personal salvation.

Doesn't that sound like every RPG ever?

Most other genres don't have an incremental improvement system like RPGs, though so many are using them (especially in multiplayer as a way of getting people to come back).
