What I love in terms of Atari 2600 game development is that it has among the best supported and certainly the most accessible programming environments for a classic console in batari Basic: http://bataribasic.com/ . Even though it's a BASIC-like language, it does in fact allow you to create commercial quality (by 2600 standards, of course) games (though of course Fries being old school went straighter to Assembly). Similar initiatives are being attempted on other classic platforms, but for the most part and certainly at present, you need to know C or Assembly language in order to program for them. In any case, I personally hope that someday I'll have the time to be able to create my own Atari 2600 game.
