The only game I ever mapped was Jet Set Willy 2. The sequel to the great Brit platformer fixed some bugs and added lots more screens/rooms to explore.
One of the rooms is called the cartography room and a main part of this screen is an area made up of bricks - one brick for each room in the game. The trick is though that any given brick will only appear in this room if you have visited the actual room in the game that that brick represents. Rather clever - there's a pickup you have to get in that room and to reach it you must visit enough rooms in the game that will activate enough bricks in this room which allow you reach the pickup.
