Liking beautiful women doesn't automatically make you shallow - only if that's the one and only thing you care about women.
And: An ugly woman isn't necessarily of better character than a beautiful one! ;-)
I also don't think that gaming habits tell too much about about yourself. Example: Many intelligent people prefer shallow TV shows instead of bombarding their brain with high-level stuff like politics or economy in their spare time, too.
I've known people who never did maps for games - because they could remember all that stuff in their heads. Personally, I've made maps only when either a dungeon was too complex (with teleport traps for example) or when it was just plain fun - like with Infocom's A Mind Forever Voyaging - one of the best text adventures of all time.
You are definitely right that a lot of modern games aren't easy to map by hand but the more complicated the maps got the more computing resources were available. I see some loose connection there.
Also: Most modern games are more linear than similar games in the past. You often don't visite the same locale twice - a handdrawn map would simply be a waste.
