Clarification

What exactly is the difference between the Facebook fan page and discussion group? I sorta get it, but maybe some clarification is necessary to avoid redundancy there. Maybe we only need one or the other.

We probably don't need the discussion group. The discussion group was all we really had before the Page. The issue with the discussion group is that there's no way to dynamically update the thing or be notified of posts, so it's a very passive experience. The page was actually what we needed all along, though Facebook didn't always make the option available (which is why you see that instead of pages, a lot of professional individuals and organizations just signed up for regular accounts).

I'll keep the discussion group open (it's unlikely to get any new members anyway, and this way what's already there can stay), but I'll make a post on there to use the fan page instead.
