I hear you about Gauntlet's simplicity. That's why I think it is important to play it with friends; it just isn't nearly as much fun alone. Sorta like artillery games like Worms. Sure, you CAN play it alone, and some do, but it becomes exponentially more fun when you add people to the mix.
In any case, I've always been a big fan of cooperative play, and Gauntlet is a great early example of it.
