Out of curiosity I went to that website and tried making some comics on my own. It's pretty fun! However, the site is pretty limited when you consider all the possibilities. Still, definitely a fast way to make quick-and-dirty comics.
Yeah, definitely limited, but it has nice functionality and you can't beat the price--free. I have comic creation software for the Amiga and more recently for the PC, but sadly the PC software I have only works on XP and my main system is Vista, so it's not particularly convenient to use it on an alternative system. Basically that software is a more robust version of what is offered for free on that site. A videogame analog are those click and place construction sets or even something like GameMaker. There's one coming out for the Xbox 360 that looks particularly promising, so I hope I can monkey with that once that's released. The easier it is to get into these things, the easier it is rough out some ideas and then there's no telling where that could lead.
One of my sadnesses (another new word there) with not getting the first book completed was that they approved comics - Antic Aardvark comics specifically - for use in the book. After a third lead artist (I was the lead writer, and there was the lead artist and then a colorist) from the original idea, it finally settled into something pretty nice. Hopefully if that book ever gets published in some form, those comics will still be able to be used.
By the way, I used to be very critical of "Penny Arcade". I've since become a huge fan. They've dramatically refined the comic is all aspects over the years to create something that I feel is truly top notch and certainly as good as even the best newspaper comics (though that's not saying much, as most are atrocious).
Vintage Games book!
