For instance, I have "adblock plus" firefox add-on that blocks tons and tons of ads on websites. I'm sure that is just as unethical or illegal as downloading a movie from Pirate Bay instead of watching it on Hulu because I want to skip the commercials. If you really think about it, it's the same difference. I'm in effect "ripping off" the websites I visit because the ads aren't getting through, yet I'm still accessing their information. Maybe I should get rid of ad block and force myself to look at all the ads, etc., as a "payment" for accessing the material I want to see.
It's funny you mention that, as I haven't used adblock plus in ages. It seems to me that the vast majority of sites I visit have done away with the most obtrusive stuff. Even if that's not the case with particular sites, I found adblock plus would often block site functionality, so it became more trouble than it's worth. I certainly like to avoid commercials whenever possible - hell, when I DVR stuff I generally skip most of the commercials with my remote - but again, I have nothing really against them as a price of entry.
Anyway, again, everyone bends the rules within their own ethical boundaries, it's just that when there are viable, low cost alternatives, one would hope that those options are always explored whenever possible.
