I don't know how the author came up with that one but the English word "door latch" (or "door handle") translates to "Klinke" (or "Türklinke") in the German language. If you look at pictures of them, you could - with a bit of imagination - associate them with the rib bones of a skeleton...

Approximately the same goes for Dutch, 'Türklinke" would be "Deurklink" and really sounds very similar.
