I personally recommend a magnetic leather flip case. I've had one since the very first day I owned my 1st gen iPhone. I happened to drop the phone, and it landed on a metal corner. It's got a pretty big dent less than a centimeter from the camera, but still works perfectly. I went on ebay and ordered something not exactly like, but very near to this one immediately after the incident.
I like the leather cases better than the various "skin tight" cases because I think they're probably better protection. Also, because my case has a "cover" over the screen, I never feel like I need protection on there. Hopefully this'll help you make a decision. Whatever kind of case you buy though, they're going to be about 50% cheaper on ebay.
