Ah, I see, so the speech synth is more like flavor than integral to the gameplay itself. It probably works best when it's supposed to be a robot or operator of some sort.
I do remember being impressed whenever old games talked, such as the speech clips from Star Wars or even the Say program on the Amiga (we had an earlier one for the C64 as well). I spent hours tweaking the voices and trying out different settings. I think to this date, though, the best one I've seen was the AT&T/Bell Labs Text to Speech Demo. If anyone could find one to top that, I'd sure like to hear it.
