I remember a review of Paladin's Legacy in Rainbow as well. The reviewer wasn't a regular CRPG player; he got bored with the game about halfway through and quit. He noted that the food system was particularly bothersome. An aspect of earlier Ultima's I didn't care for much myself, actually.
I have to admit, food systems are HUGE turn-offs for me in games, especially when they literally tick away like a clock. The only manageable one I remember, meaning I didn't particularly mind it, was the system used in FTL's Dungeon Master. I also liked the fact that killing certain creatures gave you food.
