I can't say that I have much preference about whether has me playing as a male or female, provided that it's an interesting character with personality. I enjoy playing the Nancy Drew games, for instance, and most of those have you playing as the titular female detective (hm, maybe not the best way of putting that...)
I appreciate the way the Broken Sword and Gabriel Knight games let you play roles of both genders. The last Nancy Drew implemented this as well (Nancy/Hardy Boys), so maybe they'll continue it.
In any case, I think the stereotypes to be avoided are the bubble-headed "bimbo" type or the oiled up "toyboy." I don't want to play either of those types of characters.
