Right! If I have to stare at a character portrait more than once I want it to be easy on my eyes. Though that doesn't explain to me why I've been doing it since Ultima IV. (??) I guess I was playing a character easy on my mind's eye. The only time this process started causing me problems was in MMORPG's when I would either be showered with gifts because people assumed my wood elf was being controlled by a girl or, later in the game, when people accused me of playing a girl wood elf so that I could trick people into showering me with gifts.
Genre's are hard categories to pin down and there are cultural biases, too. For instance, quirky games from Japan could be its own genre, but then in Japan each quirky game probably fits into a different culturally defined genre.
