Mustn't forget the TEXT games that preceded GUIs!!!!
What about "Adventure"?
"You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike"
from wiki:
"Microsoft released a version of Adventure with its initial version of MS-DOS 1.0 for the IBM PC (on a single sided disk, requiring 32KB of RAM). Russel Dalenberg's Adventure Family Tree page[4] provides the best (though still incomplete) summary of different versions and their relationships."
Also, Gygax and Arneson did indeed base their ideas upon Avalon Hill games. The predecessor to D&D was actually a miniatures battle system called "Chainmail".
Other notable highlights (in early) computer game history:
the Heretic/Hexen series
Doom and Quake series
Duke Nuke 'em
Monkey Isle - other Disney efforts
the Leisure Suit Larry series
Sim city and spinoffs
Myst and spinoffs
Personal favorites -- Realms of the Haunting, the Wheel of Time, Planescape: Torment
