Matt Chat with Swen Vincke

Hi, all! I'm back this week to chat with Swen Vincke, the founder of Larian Studios, a Belgian outfit. Swen is a hilarious and passionate dude, so this is a riot even if you're not a big fan of Divine Divinity. The new game is definitely worth checking out, though, since it's a big move from action to turn-based battles. They've also got some great ideas for item combining and co-op concepts. This is one where I really want them to not just hit the basic goal, but start getting into their stretch goals. Check out their Kickstarter and see this thing; I'm sure you're enjoy it if you're at all into RPGs. Their kickstarter video has a genuine LOL moment that will have you in tears.

Mark Plays... Rage Racer (PSone)

I take a look at the third part of the Ridge Racer series called 'Rage Racer'. A game by Namco released in 1996-1997 for the original PlayStation. A game quite different from the first two releases of Ridge Racer where it's not just simply racing but it is possible to advance, get more experience and basically experience a racing career. You can earn money and you get to upgrade your car and/or buy different ones.

You race within 5 racing classes on 4 different four tracks in this game - quite a bit different from the first two Ridge Racers and at the same time they look and feel familiar, especially the start/finish is similar. The car manufacturers found in the game are Gnade (Germany), Age (France), Lizard (USA) and Absoluto (Italy). All types and makes have different features and behaviours. The prologue movie on the game disc is different between American/EU release and the Japanese release. The Music in the game is quite distinct different from the first two releases.

Mark plays... Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing (My 1st-' ish' actually 2nd look)

Here I check out the PC version running on Steam (not H2O vaporized but the PC gaming platform by Valve) for the first-ish time. Actually the first video I shot of my 1st race went t*ts up so I had to reshoot it so this video basically is my 2nd look at the game.

I took a look at the sequel a little while ago. I know it is out of order but what can you do, that's just how I do things. So this game is a very cool racing game, 1st in a series at that, from the Sega stable. It was brought out on the Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo DS, Microsoft Windows , iOS and Mac OS X. Gameplay is very similar to games like Mario Kart, Konami Krazy Racers and Crash Team Racing. Everything is there Sonic and his pals, the blue Sega skies, the over-saturated colours, fast paced action. Love it!

Games on the new Xbox won't function without a permanent connection to the Internet (rumor mill?)

Sources like Kotaku claim that the new upcoming Xbox console will always have to be online to play games. Even if they are single player games. Without an internet connection the device more or less is a doorstop as it won't be possible to launch any games or apps. It is also said that internet interruptions up to 3 minutes won't cause issues but longer drop outs will halt the machine. And despite Sony denying that the new PS4 won't be able to play second hand games they did apply for a patent for technology doing that very thing. Companies do seem to be drifting away from giving a good customer service. Below are my thoughts on these matters which seems to become a reality for consumers world-wide. C64 Double Screen Compo 2013 Entries

The deadline for all entries was on March 31st, so I figured I would present a comprehensive list of the entries for the Commodore 64 2013 Double Screen Compo. The theme this year was water in a rather expansive context which could include as they put it "part of a landscape, something surreal, raindrops, animals swimming in a river, arrangements with geometric bodies, a person drinking something, a liquid sculpture, a deep sea motif.".

One caveat: Some images are suggestive and some do contain nudity. It's all in a rather artful representation.. nothing gratuitous- but I figured it was worth pointing out.

New Release: Pirates! [EASYFLASH] +10, Docs, +Bugfixes

Commodore 64 cracking group Nostalgia has just released Sid Meier's Pirates! for the EasyFlash cartridge.

This release was based off of the v2 PAL original of the game but is both PAL and NTSC compatible. The release includes documentation, a scan of the world map, numerous bugfixes and a stylish cartridge start menu.

It also comes with a save game editor and ten built-in cheats including: Sword-fight Cheat, Sea Battle Cheat, Land Battle Cheat, Crew Always Happy, Health Always Fine, Unlimited Food, City Info Cheat, Enable World Map, Display S&T on World Map, Reveal Maps at Once.

  • This version of Sid Meier's Pirates! is based on the v2 pal original.
  • It's a 101% version with numerous bugfixes.
  • It works on EasyFlash and EasyFlash3 carts.
  • It contains a save editor where you can modify your stats and import old fame and saves from both original and nostalgia disk versions.

NOTE: If you cheat or if you use the editor to modify your stats you will not be able to enter the hall of fame. You WILL have to start over with a new game.

Flash Game: Bomberjam by Mark Foster

I just stumbled upon this fun little flash game from Mark Foster called Bomberjam. The game is a local two player territory annihilation game which draws upon some Bomberman and Qix gameplay mechanics.

C64 Review: Blue Max

Back in early 1984, when I was first exposed to the Commodore 64, one of the games that I had a chance to play a fair bit of was Blue Max by Synapse Software (SynSoft in the UK). In the game, you take on the role of a hot-shot World War I biplane pilot by the name of Max Chatsworth who is known affectionately to his friends as Blue Max.

The game is essentially a 3/4 perspective vertical shooter similar to Zaxxon in presentation. You have at your disposal a machine gun with unlimited ammo as well as a finite number of bombs which you can use to take out buildings, tanks, bridges, roads and boats. Overall control of the plane is very responsive, although (as with Zaxxon) keeping your altitude straight can be rather tricky. The shadow cast by your plane helps a lot in determining your horizontal location on the level (for bombing purposes) but you need to match your altitude to that of the enemy planes in order to shoot them down. You also need to mind your altitude to do strafing as well as estimate the time for a dropped bomb to reach its target.
