Adventure II: Limited Edition now out for the Atari 5200 SuperSystem!

I'm impossibly busy this weeked with work (yes, days, nights and weekends at the new job!) and trying to get as much done with the book before Monday's deadline, but I just had to quickly release this press release for Adventure II: Limited Edition on the Atari 5200 SuperSystem from AtariAge. The homebrew was just released after a long, long wait, and from all reports it's been worth it. On top of that, this package also includes lots of goodies ("feelies" if you will), creating a tremendous value and opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts of the system, alike. There's only a few boxed copies left, so I suggest you hurry, hurry, hurry!

Mattel Intellivision Cuttle Cart 3 is Now Available for Pre-Orders!

Main Menu for the Cuttle Cart 3: Mattel IntellivisionMain Menu for the Cuttle Cart 3: Mattel IntellivisionChad Schell, creator of the famous "Cuttle Cart" multi/flash cart series for the Atari 2600 and 7800, has spun his magic again, this time for the Mattel Intellivision as the "Cuttle Cart 3". It's been a very long time since the Intellivision has had anything like this available, and the good news is is that this improves on past efforts for the system by being fully flashable and making use of MiniSD cards. The only downside (at least for me) is that it won't load the Enhanced Computer System (ECS) World Series Major League Baseball ROM, one of the most impressive early baseball games, and one of the few games I've been so far unable to acquire on cartridge for the Intellivision that I've wanted (and the only one I"m missing for the ECS add-on).

At $150 plus shipping and handling, it's not cheap, but it's still one of those undeniable "must buys" for collectors and enthusiasts, particularly since this will be yet another limited production run. It even works as a development system. I ordered mine, just like I previously ordered the "Cuttle Cart 2" for the 7800/2600. Full details here, including photos and manuals.

Classic computer, meet arcade Donkey KongClassic computer, meet arcade Donkey KongWhile it's amazing to consider, it looks like through a combination of emulation, compensation and flat-out clever programming tricks, Nintendo's arcade version of Donkey Kong has been replicated on Tandy/Radio Shack's TRS-80 Color Computer 3 (CoCo 3). All that's required is 512K and a disk drive. It's really an amazing story and well worth checking out for all fans of programming and classic technology. As we've seen time and again, where there's a desire to make something happen, there's almost always a way to do the "impossible". Thanks to L. Curtis Boyle for the heads-up on this fascinating bit of news!

Gaming Come Lately - LifeLine (PS2), Jetpac Refuelled (Xbox 360), etc.

I'm still chomping at the bit to sit down and play MLB '07 The Show from Sony for the PS2, which I've only had time to dabble in so far, and I only just took a few hours this morning to actually do my family's taxes, as well as there being the ever-present 800-pound gorilla ("the book") in my life and needing to finish organizing my videogame and computer collection (adding to many other things).

So, while these are not in-depth overviews, I wanted to quickly and specifically talk about LifeLine (2004, Konami, PS2), the infamous adventure game driven mostly by voice commands, and Jetpac Refuelled (2007, Rare, Xbox 360), the latest ~$5 release for Xbox Live Arcade based on a classic game.

A Radio Shack Color Computer Lover's Best Friend?

Thexder for the Color Computer 3 (Sierra On-Line)Thexder for the Color Computer 3 (Sierra On-Line)As fans of Tandy's venerable and mostly underappreciated Radio Shack Color Computer (CoCo) line of computers know, finding much information on the Web about their beloved system line - particularly in regards to games - is a tough proposition. As opposed to the more popular home computers that were the CoCo's contemporary competition, like the Atari 8-bit and Commodore 64 (C-64), it seems that much of the focus these days on the systems is more from a hacking/programming perspective (thanks to the ability to use the powerful "OS-9" operating system) than from a gaming standpoint. This also is no doubt due to the simple fact that the early CoCo machines - the Color Computer 1 and Color Computer 2 - weren't particularly conducive to great gaming, with a rather garish 4 color pallet for most games and single channel sound (though there was limited support for speech/sound expansion cartridges and of course the usual programming tricks to get more out of the stock system). While the backwards compatible Color Computer 3 had mostly rectified the situation by becoming a "super 8-bit" (faster processor, more memory, more colors), with performance similar to the early Apple IIgs and Atari ST computer lines in many cases (though still single channel sound!), it was never a premiere entertainment platform.

Don't Panic!

Pardon our mess...Pardon our mess...As is no doubt already abundantly clear, Armchair Arcade has received an upgrade. Hopefully this upgrade will address all remaining performance issues from too much site activity. Unfortunately, in the mean-time, it will take us some time to get the looks and menu structure back to more or less what it was. We appreciate your patience and sticking with us through what will hopefully mean a vastly improved experience.
