I've not found any information on the possible utilization of a Genesis controlpad (or any other 9-pin control device) in the com / parallel port found in the back of most computers, the symbol above the port looks like this: [---]

I wonder if it's even possible to configure this, it would be nice to simply plug my genesis controlpad in (without having to hardware hack / etc.) and have a blast with Kega, Ages, or Genecyst.

I know I should just buy a sidewinder or some logitech control device, but....

any ideas guys?

What about a li'l somethin', you know, for the effort? And he says, oh, there won't be any money, but when you die, you will receive total consciousness. So I got that goin' for me...which is nice.

Well, as you probably guessed, you can't do this directly. There have been a few attempts at making Atari-style input adapters available for use on the PC - mainly for emulators obviously - but not much has come to fruition commercially as far as I know (last I saw was an attempt to interface Intellivision controllers to the PC).

Here is a "build yourself" link to get you started, but you can do other searches yourself:

http://www.epanorama.net/documents/joystick/index.html

It's a pity, as no doubt a BIG boon for emulation would be a device or series of devices that allowed you to use original controllers with little or no driver hassles...

I'm actually able to plug a genesis control pad in to the 9-pin port, it's a perfect fit, I'm using some old toshiba satellite someone gave me to use (temporarily) as my other box shot craps a few months ago...and I can't figure out if this port is supposed to be a com, parallel, or printer port, but I thought there may be some mention of some software hanging around that may enable use of this port....
thanx for the link anyway!

It doesn't really matter if it fits or not Tom, the current is different, so either way you'd need a modification (rewiring) on the plug end or a separate adapter. It's unfortunate, but true...

You ain't lyin'!

I just can't play these old emulated games with a joypad or keyboard. I need an Atari 2600-style joystick. Or at least an old arcade-style controller, or even an Epyx xj500... Most modern joysticks have an extremely long throw, which I don't like.

Playing old emulated games on my Dreamcast has made me despise joypads.

I can recommend the Dreacmast Arcadestick, I like the feel of it, but YMMV.
