Hey, just wanted to let you Armchair Arcade readers know that I am going to be hosting a radio show for my college radio station titled Do the Mario! It will feature video game music as well as remixes (not to mention orchestral performances).

I just mixed a promo for the show and wanted some opinions on it. You can listen to the radio show on Saturdays from 6-8 PM online at SCAD Radio.

That is cool. I just am not sure that anyone wants Mario dance tracks saturday night. This seems more like a tuesday night show.

No NFL (Sun,Mon,Thur), no HS football or partying (Fri), no college football (Sat), and tuesday night is better for radio listening because you can still put off any homework for another couple of days at least.

I realy do like the mix, I might consider panning it a bit more or flange the mono stuff out a bit to 'widen' it. Though that could get in the way of the true mono flashback sound.

Good luck on the show, and keep us posted on what kind of listener feedback you receive.

The music is not just Mario music, but the promo has five or so tracks that crossfade together. I will put together a site soon to promote the show, so I'll keep you guys and gals posted.

I've often thought it'd be cool to do a college radio show dedicated to game music, especially retro game music and "demoscene music." Some of the music from the scene is just too awesome..

If I were doing the show, though, I wouldn't emphasize the "videogame music" part, but would just play the tunes and talk about the artists--i.e., instead of saying "Commodore 64 game music--here's Commando theme song!" I'd just say, "Here's a Rob Hubbard tune called Commando," etc. Occasionally splice in some good electronic music with a good beat, such as Kraftwerk, and you have something that might attract some loyal fans eager for new sounds (there are plenty of people out there who are just dying for something NEW and interesting to listen to).

Ultimately, if you're going to make people want to listen to this show, you're going to have to move beyond "Oh, I know that tune, it's from Super Mario Bros." to, "Wow, I really like that music sounds." When I first started listening to nectarine and the like, at first I was only happy if I recognized the game the tune was from and had that "nostalgia" feeling. Now, I just enjoy the music and don't care if the music was ever used in a game; I just like the way it sounds. There's art there.

I'm not really part of the "Nintendo Generation," so hearing these Mario tunes doesn't do much for me. However, I can appreciate why you'd need that for the current college crowd, even if most of them consider anything pre-PS1 to be total crap.

I've always felt that nectarine radio (scenemusic.net) had a wonderful mix of old and new stuff. I haven't listened much to Kohina, but everybody seems to like them. Slay Radio does some of the best C-64 remixes, but to be honest, I'd rather hear the originals.

Good luck with the show!

I'll have to check out the C-64 remix scene-- I never owned one, but realize there is a pretty big selection of chipset tunes.

The way I have the first episode laid out is a few tracks from a certain series of games (in this case, fittingly, Mario games) followed by some remixes-- but not remixes of the original music that you just heard.

The Mario connection is to just to join the name of the show to the ad. I am at an art school and everyone always wears those Mario T-Shirts from Hot Topic, so there is a big Nintendo crowd here. Although I got started on an Atari, there are still some gamers my age (early 20's) that only got started with a PSX or X-Box.

That's some cool stuff deshrill...

You HAVE to play some Streets of Rage music. That game has such beautiful music, courtesy of Yuzo Koshiro. Yuzo is the man! How he made the Genesis have such great music is so amazing. They were so catchy and sounded so crisp and ambient, like Aphex Twin or Moby.

Thanks!

The first two Streets of Rage games had great music. Castlevania: Bloodlines also had pretty good music as well.

I'll probably do a Genesis themed episode at some point.

Also, I just wanted to point out that my show is on Saturdays 6-8 PM EST (Eastern Standard Time). The link to SCAD Radio is above.

I just updated the promo... I had to trim it, so I added some extra remix clips to it to keep it to a 30 second length so it can be entered in the CBI National Production Awards.

Sorry, no XM. You can listen to it online, though.
