I'm not really looking forward to any of those games in particular (at least the ones whose titles I could understand). When I start reading about some of the unique things some of these games will be doing with the system, then perhaps I'll get more interested. I imagine we'll have to get quite a bit of information soon as the thing is supposed to launch by the end of the year. Nintendo has never been too good with release dates though...

Saw an extensive piece on Tech TV about this. Developers are really trying to make good use of the two screens, but not every game can really benefit from such a thing. One really cool thing I have seen, RPG's always have an open inventory/control screen. How cool is that? Setting up a spell/weapon screen would make combat so much easier in such a game. As far as FPS's go, not much new there. Looks like most of them just provide an overhead map on the second screen.

Nintendo apparently really has their ducks in a row for this. Tons of games are up and running on the system, and of course, it is backwards compatible with everything all the way back to game boy. Chances care people will be ablt to go trade in their Game Boy SP for a decent piece of cash to put down on the new device just like you could during the last transition. They will beat Sony to market by a longshot. Sony still can't produce a working unit, much less a game running on it. So, it looks like Nintendo will keep its dominance in this market a while longer. It will be interesting to see if they can use the income to make a comeback with their home system. We shall see.

Actually, I've seen mixed reports on the DS' backwards compatibility. It's only been confirmed that it's compatible with the GBA, not necessarily the GC and GB, as far as I've seen. Not a major deal as far as I'm concerned, however.

They'll definitely beat Sony to market by about a year if they do indeed hit their optimistic launch date. There have been very few Nintendo systems launched on-time, though, so I'll take a wait and see for this one.

It really doesn't matter in the end though. It used to be people played "Atari". Then with the NES, they played "Nintendo". For a short time it was play "Sega". Now it's play "PlayStation". (all in the generic) That's a tough brand recognition to compete against. I'm positive Nintendo can hold their dominance short to medium term, but frankly the PSP is considerably more powerful and has a lot more sex appeal, as well the PlayStation name, to lose out long-term. Nintendo should be scared, particularly if they can't get consistent third party support. You just KNOW Sony is going to have it. The DS may have lots of announced support, but then so did a lot of other systems. It's what will make it out that's really important.

I'll of course try to own both handhelds when that becomes financially possible, but I'm honestly not convinced the DS has the right gimmick or the power for the long haul...

I'm going to buy both... but I suspect the PSP is going to fullfill the same role as the lynx once did. Portable, but note really usable on the go, because of poor battery life (Sony already announced a external battery!)and it'll be awkward to put away (to avoid damaging the screen you'll probably have to use a pouch or something). IMO the folding design makes the DS (as well as the SP) a winner. Just fold it up and put it in your pocket. No damage, no dust. It would be even better is folding triggered a standby mode.

I agree with MrCustad above, the PSP does not strike me as truly 'portable'. My GBA SP I can put in the pocket of my coat/jacket but the PSP seems a bit too bulky and all that sexiness should lose its charm with scratches on its screen.

I for one am extremely happy to see strong support from SquareEnix this early. It's a very good sign, not only , for that particular firm, but for the overall japanese market. With Konami, Capcom and Namco backing it, the DS should be a hit in Japan. However, if these titles are exclusive or not, remains to be seen.

I probably will be getting a PSP (the thought of gran turismo on the move.....), but it better be truly portable. My devices need to be. I pull a lot of nightshifts (I am in training to become a psychiatrist) and besides the hard work there's quite a bit of waiting involved in different places so I need a devide that I can easily take with me and play - preferrably 8+ hours or so.

My gba-sp & gp32 now cater for my needs perfectly - I use both mostly for emulation purposes which leave me playing around in the 8/16 bit era. There are only a few gba games that I really enjoy, most of them are snes ports anyway. And there's not many commercial nice gp32 games yet.

I would love to be able to enjoy more extensive 32+bit gameplay with more immersive games on the go. My guess is that the new nintendo device will be most portable with the better battery life....

I'lll probably get both, if only to be able to keep up with MrCustard hehehehe

I think both of these products (Nintendo DS and PSP) are going to have a tough row to hoe in this country because of one reason: PRICE! Seriously, the asking prices I've seen bandied about are quite excessive for a toy!

Would you spend $150 or $300 (*GASP!!*) for a portable game machine for your kid? That's a lot of money to spend on something that will likely be accidentally left on the playground or at Joey's house, get banged around in a bookbag, or get stolen!

I still believe that the major market for these kind of devices will be kids. We just had a thread here about how/why adults, in general, would be embarrassed to be seen playing these things in public, and I don't see that changing much in the near future. (Personally, I'd play the heck out of one in public, for the most part I don't care.)

Actually, the beneficiary of all this might be the Gameboy Advance! People will balk at the asking price of the other portables and opt for the cheaper GBA instead!
