I wanted to check out what other retrogamers experiences have been with regard to their family, friends and partner when you tell them you are into to playing and collecting retro games. I myself have experienced a certain amount of disdain from friends who do not share my passion although my girlfriend does not seem to mind too much as long as i devote some time to her!

I guess if you walked around with a pencil protector and told people you didnt know well that you were into pac man, you might get a less than favorable reaction.

I never get that though, most 30-40 year olds had exposure to them when they were kids and can relate - in fact i have made many converts over the years!

Went to a meeting last week and a gaming friend of mine was there. We were talking before the meeting started about Atari and Genesis systems and who owned what...before we knew it the room went silent and it was just the two of us banting back and forth!!! Seems we were speaking a different language from the rest of the room!!

Younger folks don't seem to be into Retro, at least where I work. I'm 45 and my friends that are also into it are in the same age group.

My wife is very understanding. Past women I have dated long term have been understanding as well. The key of course to any relationship is making sure you're a well-rounded individual with many interests. Any person with a laser focus on any one thing is a bore to be around.

Of course I've had prejudice in the past, particularly with my family. It's usually when someone truly doesn't understand the whole concept though.

There's one guy I know at work who seems into it like I am. Interestingly (or maybe "tellingly"), we actually can't stand each other...

I to am fortunate to have am understanding wife. Though she doesn't share or really "get" it she is happy to let me indulge myself, not exactly the worst habit or vice I think in her opinion. Funny she herself is an IT Tech Specialist but the last thing she wants to see when she gets home is a PC, like many woman to her it's simply a tool. Though she doesn't mind watching downloaded video I stream to the TV her taste in games are the basics such as Euchre or puzzle based games. She is one of those people who gets dizzy when viewing modern 3D gameplay, thank god I don't have that issue.

Oldschool games, some people just don't "get it"...

The only game that has gotten me dizzy was Wolfenstein 3-D. Back when I first played it, dizziness wasn't an issue, but since then I can barely play the game without feeling a bit queasy.

I got the original Half-Life this past Christmas. At first, I couldn't play it for more than an hour because of the low-res graphics whizzing by at high-speed would make me queasy.

Then, I realized that the graphics were set to the lowest, default settings. I cranked the settings way up and the problem went away. This also made the game look MUCH better. It's sad that 3D graphics haven't really changed all that much in the past few years.

I collect Atari 2600 games & systems. Please check out my trade list.

I was able to get the collector's edition of Half-LIfe 2 for a song recently (just under $50!), and the DVD is supposed to contain a remix of the Half-Life 1 done with the new engine. It will be interesting to see the differences. I had a copy of Half-Life for the PC, but never really tried it much past the first few minutes. I tinkered with the Dreamcast version a bit more, but haven't gone back to it. I was actually most interested in the PS2 version until I bought Half-Life 2 CE, so I'll make a point of playing it on its original platform, albeit with the updated audio-visuals...

Bill - to have purchased half-life and not played it through is a crime. One of the landmark games of our time not for graphics but for gameplay!

Well, hopefully Half-Life "remix" will change all of that eventually...

I'm overwhelmed with stuff to go through. Half-Life is the least of my "tasks" right now...
