A war always in my mind; would I rather be stuck with the "game pak" of Super Mario Brothers 2; pulling up vegetables and seeking the magic potion to enter the world of "Subcon" or the diehard gamer version of Super Mario One (replete with poisonous mushrooms) ? To this day I've still found myself betwe'enst them both. I'm grateful they both are at my disposal (dear, sweet emulation / Nintendo; cognizant of gamer's needs) but if one had to choose, which would it be? Let's see ArmchairArcade faithful choose their platforming pleasure.

"A what?"

"A hoofer, y'know, a caddy. So who do you think they give me but the Dalai Llama himself! The grace, the flowing robes, everything.....so at the end, he's gonna' stiff me! And I say, hey! What about a li'l somethin', you know, for the effort? And he says, oh, there won't be any money, but when you die, you will receive total consciousness. So I got that goin' for me...which is nice.

Well, Super Mario 2 US was actually a graphics change from a completely different game, so that's why it doesn't feel like Mario. I think the gameplay is fresh though, so it's a welcome addition to the series regardless.

Yes, I believe the original japanese game was called Doki Doki Panic.

Nintendo did take notice of the expanded gameplay mechanics in (US) Mario 2, which led to Super Mario World being less of a simple "hop and bop" which, in turn, may have been a lesson Nintendo began to live by with the Mario franchise and it's many gameplay innovations each successive Mario title. (I can see why some people would be bored with the latest "bigger, better, more of the same!" sported by the Sonic series)

Many 3d platform games today could trace their usage of a game "camera" and other certain 3d game elements to Mario 64.

It's interesting, but Tomb Raider (PC) and Mario 64 (N64) were developed basically concurrently and independently and both tackled the same problem slightly differently. They're both the forbearers of modern 3D platformers, but Mario 64 was and still is the better designed game, even though I personally don't enjoy it.

SMB2 was my favorite NES game of all time! I thought it was highly imaginative, and thought it was a far superior game to SMB1, which I really never liked much. Perhaps the fact that SMB2 was actually based on a different game is why I liked it the best!

What we know here as Super Mario Bros. 2 is known in Japan as Super Mario Bros USA. What is known in Japan as SMB 2 is known here as SMB: The Lost Levels. Everyone got that straight?

Anyway, I thought the Lost Levels was a good game. The poison mushrooms and negative warps really added to the game. Originally though, I heard Nintendo wouldn't release it here because they thought it was too much like the original game. So they modified the game Doki Doki Panic and released it here as SMB 2 (in Japan, it's SMB USA).

It could also be that the guys at Nintendo of America thought that the game was too hard for American players. I have to admit the game is very challenging as I have not been able to beat it yet and I'm a veteran gamer.

So which version do gamers most rely upon to get their gaming fix?

Before answering I must go back to when I first played Super Mario 2. I was dissapointed with this game because it deviated so much from the original. I basically wanted more of the same with better graphics and refined gameplay. What I got was a game totally different than the original. I still played and enjoyed the game, but I felt a little let down by Nintendo. When I did some reading and discovered that there was a true sequel to SMB in Japan I was even more upset with SMB2. As the years went by Nintendo released Super Mario All Stars on the SNES. This game included "The Lost Levels", basically the true successor to SMB. I was thrilled to actually get a chance to play SMB2 the way I had envisioned it. In the end I was dissapointed because it was basically the same game as SMB. In retrospect I think that Super Mario USA aka Super Mario Brothers 2 was a better game then the Japanese sequel. In the end though I have to say that SMB1 is my preferred Mario Brothers game even today.

SMB - Lost levels - without question. The Doki-Doki Panic bastardisation was OK but for a lasting challenge you have to go with Lost Levels.
