I know this isn't gaming related, but wanted to pass along a bad experience we recently had in the hope that it may help somebody.

Our 4-yr old had been sick off and on for 3 weeks. Her symptoms were Flu-like, fever, sweats, no appetite, etc. We took her to the doctor 3 times leading up to last weekend. The only thing we were told to do was keep her hydrated and on Tylenol for the fever. Well, not sure how many of you have young ones but try to get someone who doesn't want to eat or drink to eat or drink!!

We got a call from the pre-school at 1000 last Fri to say that our daughter had a fever again and was very listless.

My wife picked her up and took her to the doctor. The doctor told them to proceed immediately to the hospital. We waited in the waiting room for 4 hours before the on-call doctor finally saw us. To make a long story short, the doctor said if we had waited another hour she would have died. She was so badly dehydrated they had to give her an IV and proceeded to pump 4 liters into her. It was about the scariest thing I had ever been through.

Don't take the flu or flu-like symptoms lightly, especially with kids. We should have gone straight to the hospital vice the doctor.

Thank God it turned out all right. We had to deal with trying to get fluids into our stubborn 16 month old last week and it was not pleasant! Definitely don't take any chances with our kids!

Strange thing is our older kids had the flu when they were younger and we never had dehydration issues with them like we have with our youngest. She was drinking but just not enough I guess during this last episode. The emergency room Dr. said he's noticed more cases like this in the last 2 months than he has for the past 10 years combined.

Interesting... Maybe this is a trickle down effect from less flu vaccinations being available in the US?

There is a huge variation in how kids respond to being sick. From an epidemiological standpoint one cannot make such conclusions from experiences from one family. But an interesting hypothesis!

Good advise is always to be cautious when kids are sick. Smaller bodies dehydrate faster. Hope your little girl is feeling a lot better soon!
